Growing up, I always knew I was different. I struggled with my gender identity, feeling like I was constantly playing a role that didn’t quite fit. It took me over 30 years to realize I was non-binary, and discovering the language and community that allowed me to explore my identity has been life-changing.
As a non-binary, queer individual, I understand the importance of feeling accepted, supported, and valued, not just in my personal life but also in the workplace. That’s why I chose to work at Grace Hill, a company that values diversity and boasts a diverse group of employees with half of my team identifying as queer. I appreciate their openness to improvement and commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive environment for all employees, particularly those in the LGBTQ+ community.
In this article, I want to share my thoughts on 5 ways companies can create a truly inclusive environment and describe the impact I plan to make at Grace Hill.
- Education and Awareness: Provide resources and training for employees to strengthen their understanding of the LGBTQ+ community, pronouns, and related issues. This helps create an empathetic and supportive work environment.
- Inclusive Policies: Implement policies that cover gender-affirming medical procedures, allow employees to change their name and gender marker on company records without legal documentation, and provide gender-neutral restrooms.
- Employee Resource Groups (ERGs): Establish and encourage participation in ERGs for LGBTQ+ employees and allies, providing safe spaces for sharing experiences, networking, and receiving support.
- Celebrate Diversity: Organize company-wide events, guest speakers, or workshops that highlight the importance of diversity and inclusion, fostering a sense of community and belonging among employees.
- Relocation Aid: Offer assistance to employees who need to relocate to safer states or regions as anti-trans measures continue to be introduced.
As a proud team member at Grace Hill, I plan to make an impact by making suggestions for improving inclusivity at Grace Hill and within our solutions. I am grateful for Grace Hill’s dedication to creating a supportive work environment where all employees can thrive. By sharing my insights and ideas to advocate for more inclusive practices, I can contribute to our culture and foster a supportive work environment for all.
Members of the LGBTQ+ community don’t want special treatment; we simply want to live and work in a safe and inclusive environment. By prioritizing inclusivity through meaningful actions, companies can create an environment that attracts and retains diverse talent, helps reduce discrimination and harassment, and ultimately leads to greater innovation and success.
My journey as a non-binary, queer individual has been challenging, but it has also been incredibly rewarding. As I continue to explore my identity and navigate the complexities of being myself in a world that often struggles to accept differences, I hope that sharing my experiences can contribute to fostering more inclusive workplaces and societies for everyone, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation.
