It’s been two years since Sara Ogle was honored as a finalist for the Impact Hero Award, and we recently had the pleasure of catching up with her to see how this award has influenced her life and work. Her journey since receiving the award has been nothing short of inspiring, and we’re excited to share her reflections with you in the Q&A below.
Where Her Journey Began
“Big heart. Giving spirit. Passionate. Servant leader. True hero. These are a few phrases used to describe Sara Ogle.”
Sara Ogle was our 2022 Impact Hero First Runner-Up. Her impact journey began after watching a webinar by popular speaker Toni Blake on social responsibility, specifically Red Nose Day, which is an annual fundraising campaign to end the cycle of child poverty and ensure a healthy future for all children.
Inspired by what she heard, Sara jumped at the chance to participate in a Red Nose Day event, but she didn’t stop there. Going beyond just her multifamily community, she took the initiative to create RHCares, a company-wide philanthropic movement for Westwinds parent company, Ripley Heatwole Company, Inc.
While she successfully spearheaded various volunteer campaigns for RHCares, that was just the beginning for Sara. From there, her efforts and impact blossomed, driven by what she clearly recognized as a need for change in her immediate community.
The Personal and Professional Ripple Effects
When we asked Sara about the impact of the award, she highlighted the incredible opportunities it has opened up for her. Reflecting on the ripple effects of being recognized as an Impact Hero award winner, she sees how it has been instrumental in her career growth while amplifying her ability to contribute meaningfully to her community.
Grace Hill (GH): How has receiving the Impact Hero Award impacted both your personal and work life since winning?
Sara Ogle (SO): Winning this award was so rewarding for me, both personally and professionally. It has allowed me opportunities to network with those in circles I may not have otherwise had the chance to do so. It has also allowed me to form stronger relationships with public servants in our community, leading to making a bigger impact in the community.
Sara’s recognition as an Impact Hero has had profound ripple effects that extend far beyond the initial accolade. The award has bolstered her professional credentials and strengthened her community connections, empowering her to drive significant, positive change.
As Sara continues to leverage these opportunities, she exemplifies the enduring impact that recognition can have on an individual’s ability to influence and improve the world around them.
Lessons and Insights: A Journey of Empathy and Strength
Sara’s involvement with community organizations has profoundly deepened her understanding of empathy and resilience and broadened her perspectives, allowing her to connect with diverse groups and with unique challenges. Reflecting on her experiences through the process of being recognized as an Impact Hero, she shared with us the following:
GH: Can you reflect on any lessons or insights you’ve gained about yourself or your work through the process of being recognized as an Impact Hero?
SO: I’ve realized that I am stronger and more empathetic than I ever knew I could be — and how heavy the weight of empathy can be at times. Through my work in the community, especially with partners such as Stop the Violence 757, I’ve been exposed to different cultures and issues with which I do not have the same shared experiences. For example, assisting with events for mothers who have lost children to gun violence and finding ways to combat and eliminate such acts has been heartbreaking and discouraging at times because you feel so helpless. However, it has a profound impact on their lives just knowing someone is there and wants to understand and make a difference.
Sara’s journey illustrates the transformative power of empathy and resilience. Her work with community organizations has not only enhanced her personal growth but also made a significant difference in the lives of those she serves. Through her commitment and compassion, Sara continues to inspire others, demonstrating that even in the face of immense challenges, one person’s efforts can create a lasting positive impact.
Leadership and Collaboration: A New Approach
The Impact Hero Award has also reshaped Sara’s approach to leadership and collaboration. This newfound confidence has inspired Sara to advocate for collective efforts, emphasizing that more significant change can be achieved together.
GH: How has winning the Impact Hero Award influenced your approach to leadership and collaboration within your projects or initiatives?
SO: It has given me greater confidence in myself and the belief that I can do more. It is my goal for 2025 to launch a local philanthropic group within the multifamily industry to give back.
Her vision for a philanthropic group is a testament to her continued commitment to fostering community engagement and support. By championing collective efforts and envisioning new initiatives, she is poised to drive even greater community engagement and support. Her journey underscores the power of recognition in inspiring leaders to aim higher and achieve more together.
Memorable Moments and Inspiring Interactions
Sara recounted several memorable interactions that have inspired her along the way.
GH: Can you share any memorable moments or interactions with individuals who were inspired by your recognition as an Impact Hero?
SO: This past year, I was recognized by two organizations in our community, CUTS Yep and Stop the Violence 757. Both are making a significant impact on our local communities. I was humbled to receive these acknowledgments. One particularly memorable moment was meeting a woman at a gala who shared with me how proud she was to be part of the multifamily industry, knowing there are still kind souls trying to make a difference. We discussed the importance of remembering that while we are a business, we are a people business first. That day, I met a friend for life.
Sara’s memorable interactions and heartfelt connections highlight the profound impact of her recognition as an Impact Hero. These experiences validate her efforts and reinforce the importance of empathy and kindness in the multifamily industry; it’s a testament to the power of recognition in fostering meaningful relationships and inspiring others to make a difference.
Driving Change: A Trusted Advocate
The award has also enhanced Sara’s ability to drive change and support her community.
GH: How has the Impact Hero Award recognition influenced your ability to drive change or make a difference in your community?
SO: Community leaders and public servants have contacted me for assistance with various resources, knowing that I will not leave any stone unturned. Receiving a personal call from the Mayor asking for my help with different family situations was incredibly humbling. I was so humbled that he trusted me. I feel like this award drives change in that others are following suit, joining causes and helping strangers without motive or intent.
Sara’s inspiration to others highlights the far-reaching impact of her efforts. Her unwavering commitment and trusted advocacy exemplify the true essence of leadership, demonstrating how one person’s dedication can inspire collective action and foster a spirit of philanthropy.
The Broader Impact: A Community’s Gratitude
One of the most touching moments in Sara’s journey was realizing the broader impact she had on her community.
GH: Have you noticed a broader impact within your community or field as a result of winning the award?
SO: When I decided to make a career change and leave a position I’d held for ten years, the community hosted a going-away party. The residents’ thoughtful gifts and heartfelt speeches moved me deeply. Hearing their stories of feeling safe, knowing I was doing everything possible to create a community where strangers become friends and then “family” moved me to tears. They thanked me over and over for being a part of that family. I do not know that I ever realized just how big an impact I had made on their lives, and I know for sure they didn’t realize the impact they had on mine!
